An archived page from WITS (World Integrated Trade Solution) website from September 5, 2020 shows the HS Code 300215 is referred to as "COVID-19 Test kits" and billions of dollars of goods under this header were shipped to 95 countries in 2017: https://web.archive.org/web/20200905210427if_/https://wits.worldbank.org/trade/comtrade/en/country/ALL/year/2017/tradeflow/Imports/partner/WLD/nomen/h5/product/300215

In March 2020, the WHO and WCO issued a classification reference, indicating which HS classification should be used for commonly traded goods related to the pandemic. This included "COVID-19 Test kits", classified under 3002.15, which is described as "Diagnostic reagents based on immunological reactions".

The WITS team incorporated the descriptions in the reference into their database to make it easier to report on key COVID-related medical supplies in WITS, but did not anticipate that this would mean that older trading data would use the new terms, causing confusion and conspiracy theories.
The World Bank explained the change on September 8, 2020:

Patent US7220852B1 "Coronavirus isolated from humans"

The patent relates to SARS-CoV, which is an entirely different virus from SARS-CoV-2.
SARS-CoV is the virus that causes SARS. SARS-CoV-2 is the virus that causes COVID-19.
The reason the CDC patented the virus was to ensure that others could not control the technology for detecting SARS-CoV and to keep SARS work in the public domain.
“The whole purpose of the patent is to prevent folks from controlling the technology,” CDC spokesman Llelwyn Grant said to NBC News. “This is being done to give the industry and other researchers reasonable access to the samples.”
